Answered prayer

What a blessing.

Monday I finish my bus route and return home to study for the hazmat test. A friend (we were roommates back when I went to the Millis Training Institute) who drives for Millis calls me. He says that he just got a message on the QualCom that there are a couple of openings for OTR and if anyone knows a safe driver looking for a job, have them call.

My anxiety level shoots up. In my mind I think, 'Why would Millis hire me back? I have already been given two chances to work for them and both times left for personal reasons. Now I'm going back, hat in hand, and asking them to give me another chance?'

Well, that's what I did.

I called Millis and told them that my friend said to call. The personnel director looks up my record. He is glad that I went to the MTI to learn to drive and after a brief, friendly discussion; he says that he will pass a paper around to all of the departments to see if there are any objections and get back with me. Joy. Now I get to be anxious for lot longer.

The next afternoon, I'm driving my bus my phone rings. I see from the area code it is Millis. I'd have hated to have to take a blood pressure test right then. I finally get to park the bus and I call Millis. "Hi Bob, I've got your rehire paper work started. When do you want to come to orientation?"

WooHooo!

I get a third bite of the cherry. I will be hitching a ride with a Millis driver to Richfield WI for orientation on the sixth. I will have to go with a trainer for a couple of weeks to get my skills and endurance back. I already know the Millis paper work, procedures, logs, trip planning and where all of the terminals are and a lot of the customers.

Now, I've never worked for another carrier but I've heard stories. Millis has proven to me to be the family oriented business that they say they are. I am like the prodigal son and you can bet that I will be giving them my best and won’t be jumping ship.

Thanks Millis. I am proud to drive for you.
